    Bolpur Central Excise & Service Tax Commissionerate came into existence in the year 1984. At that time it was only Central Excise Commissionerate (Collectorate) having jurisdiction over entire North Bengal (district of Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, North & South Dinajpur and Malda), Sikkim and district of Burdwan, Purulia, Bankura, Birbhum and Murshidabad of South Bengal. However, upon restructuring of Central Excise Department, Silliguri Central Excise Commissionerate was formed on 1st November 2002 carving out the jurisdiction comprises of the District of Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Coochbehar, North and South Dinajpur and Malda in the state of West Bengal and the entire Sikkim from Bolpur Commissionerate. Again restructuring of Central Excise Department was effected in the year 2014 and Durgapur Central Excise & Service Tax Commissionerate was formed on 14th October 2014 carving out the jurisdiction comprises of the district of Bankura and Durgapur Sub-Division of Burdwan district.

    This Commissionerate is entrusted with the task of collection of duties/taxes in the notified territorial jurisdiction of Commissionerate and related administrative functions. The primary function of a Central Excise & Service Tax Commissionerate is to enforce Central Excise Act, 1944 as well as the Finance Act, 1994 and Rules framed there under and the various provisions of Central Excise Tariff Act, 1985 and other allied acts passed by the Parliament of India.

    The Headquarter of Bolpur Central Excise & Service Tax Commissionerate is situated at Bolpur nearly 6 Kms away from the town. This town is famous for Visvabharti University, Shantiniketan established by Gurudev Ravindranath Tagore.
