Siliguri Central Excise Commissionerate was formed on 1st December 2002 by bifurcating Commissionerate of Central Excise, Bolpur. Its jurisdiction covers the districts of Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Coochbehar, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur and Malda in the state of West Bengal and the entire state of Sikkim.

Consequent upon the Notification Nos. 132/2009-Customs ( N.T.) and 133/2009- Customs ( N.T.) both dated 09.09.2009 issued by Government of India , Ministry of Finance , Department of Revenue and subsequently vide Customs Public Notice No. 1/2009 dated 24.12.09 issued by Chief Commissioner of Customs, Kolkata, bifurcated the Jurisdiction of Commissioner of Customs (Preventive), West Bengal, Kolkata and appointed the Commissioner of Central Excise, Siliguri Commissionerate as the ‘Commissioner of Customs’ within the revenue districts of Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Coochbehar, North Dinajpur in the state of West Bengal and the whole of the state of Sikkim with effect from 1st January 2011.

Siliguri Commissionerate has the distinction of having jurisdiction over four international borders and a sensitive Siliguri corridor (which is also known as chicken’s neck). Siliguri corridor or chicken’s neck of north east India is a narrow stretch of land which connects the north-eastern states to the mainland India. This 21 to 40 Km land mass is the only land access to northeastern states from the rest of India. The railway line passing through this corridor and NH31 are highly critical to India. Given the unique geographical disposition, this region has the potential to emerge as a major trading hub for international and transit trade, in view of which importance of the Commissionerate as a trade facilitator is bound to increase in future.

The Headquarter of the Commissionerate is located in Central Revenue Building, 24, Haren Mukerjee Road, Hakimpara, Siliguri-734001, Dist. Darjeeling in the state of West Bengal.
